What is Ortho K?

Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology, also known as OrthoK, is the use of specially designed contact lenses to temporarily reshape the front of the eye (cornea) to improve vision. OrthoK is like orthodontics for your eyes- the treatment is similar to that of dental braces. OrthoK contact lenses are worn at night while you sleep. Similar to wearing a retainer on your teeth after braces, these specially designed contact lenses act as a very gentle retainer for your eyes. Unlike refractive surgery such as LASIK or PRK, vision improvements are reversible, but can be maintained if lenses are worn as directed.

Some patients with mild nearsightedness wake up to find their vision corrected 100% after the first night! However, it may take slightly longer to achieve 100% vision correction depending on your prescription. Once full correction is achieved, patients enjoy crisp, clear vision throughout the entire day without aid of glasses or daytime contact lenses.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Ortho K?

OrthoK is safe and effective for patients of all ages. OrthoK is a great option for those who play sports, cannot wear contact lenses due to discomfort or allergies, work in dusty environments, or simply want freedom from glasses and daytime contact lenses! Recent studies have shown the use of OrthoK may slow and possibly stop the progression of nearsightedness (myopia) in children

How Do I Start Ortho K?

At Horvath Vision Care Northwoods, Dr. Lara Leach and Dr. Rebecca Lugar specialize in fitting OrthoK lenses. We will see you for a contact lens evaluation with Dr. Leach or Dr. Lugar to determine if OrthoK lenses are the right vision solution for you! At this appointment a technician will take measurements of the surfaces of your eyes and the doctor will fit you for your lenses

OrthoK lenses are custom made to fit your eyes. Because of this, we will design your OrthoK lenses and see you back for a follow up appointment after the lenses have been made at our lab. At this visit, our staff will teach you how to properly clean and wear your new OrthoK contact lenses to maximize vision and minimize potential risks. Your doctor will see you for one day, one week, one month, three month, and six month follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.

We are committed to finding the best possible solution for YOU!
